A letter circulating on social media, authored and signed by Vrede Ward 4 Councillor Mr. K.A. Sibeko, has formally requested a special council meeting to table a motion of no confidence against Mayor Mr. M.D. Kobeni.
This letter has been sent to various offices and departments, yet there has been no official response. The Phumelela community is eagerly awaiting comments from local Councillors and the Municipality, but there has been a concerning silence. As this situation unfolds, there is considerable speculation among residents of the three towns (Memel, Vrede and Warden.
The letter outlines several reasons for the proposed motion against Mayor Kobeni:
- Misuse of municipal vehicles outside the Free State province since 2021.
- Damage to municipal vehicles on more than two occasions without reporting to the council.
- Misleading the municipal council regarding the 2024/2025 budget, which is reportedly unfunded.
- A dysfunctional municipality since 2021, resulting in inadequate service delivery across all Phumelela units (Vrede, Memel, and Warden).
- Interference with municipal administration.
The letter was signed in Vrede on October 4, 2024, at 10:47 AM. Some residents have expressed concerns that this situation may lead to conflict or confusion within the Phumelela offices.
